Meaning and background
The story behind Winnipeg
Winnipeg is the capital of Manitoba, Canada, and the city takes its name from Lake Winnipeg to its north. The city's own historical explanation derives the lake name from Cree words for muddy or murky water; a separate etymological reference proposes an Ojibwe source. Both belong to the Algonquian language family, but they should not be silently treated as identical claims. As a pet name, Winnipeg is a borrowed place name, not a universal personal-name translation.

- Canadian city name taken from Lake Winnipeg; municipal history traces the lake name to Cree words denoting muddy or murky water, while another etymological analysis proposes Ojibwe. Source
