Meaning and background
The story behind Wiz
Wiz is an informal English spelling related to whizz and, especially in American usage, a shortening of wizard for somebody very skilled at an activity. It does not usually denote a literal magician, although the longer word wizard also has that sense. The name is pronounced WIZ and can work as a brief, emphatic call. A dog named Wiz need not be clever or fast: those would be interpretations, not facts arising from the dictionary entry.
