Meaning and background
The story behind Wong
Wong is a widely used Romanisation associated with several different Chinese surnames. Depending on the language variety and the written character, it can correspond to surnames such as 黃, 王 or 汪, among others. The familiar spelling does not identify which one a particular family uses. For that reason a universal translation such as 'yellow' or 'king' would be misleading. As a dog name it may honour a family surname, but that motive cannot be assumed.
