Meaning and background
The story behind Xiu
Xiu is a Romanised Chinese given name that may be written with different characters. One attested form uses 秀, with meanings including elegant, excellent and flourishing, but similarly pronounced characters can give other interpretations. A reference pronunciation represents the Mandarin syllable as approximately /ɕjoʊ̯/, although tones depend on the character. It would be inaccurate to describe every Xiu as meaning 'beautiful' without knowing which Chinese character the original namer had in mind.
