Xochi is recorded in a Nahuatl linguistic resource as a word meaning 'flower', related to xochitl. The fuller form is also attested as a personal name and as a word with ceremonial uses. The short form therefore has a defensible linguistic connection, but that does not settle exactly how an individual dog obtained the name. Nahuatl pronunciation follows different rules from English X spellings, so a casual 'ZOH-chi' reading should not be imposed as authoritative.
