Meaning and background
The story behind Yams
Yams is simply the plural form of yam, the edible starchy tuber. The word may bring food or cooking to mind, but its botanical use should not be mixed up with the separate sweet potato without qualification. The plural gives it a slightly comic sound as a pet name, particularly for a small dog. No historical personal-name origin is needed to explain the ordinary English word on which it is based.
