Meaning and background

The story behind Zico

Zico offers a football namesake through the Brazilian player Arthur Antunes Coimbra. The Japan Football Association's Hall of Fame profile records his appearances at three World Cups from 1978 to 1986, his work with Kashima Antlers and his later coaching of Japan. That provides a substantial sporting association for the short name. The biography identifies the person known as Zico; it does not supply the nickname's linguistic derivation.
