Meaning and background
The story behind Alonso
Alonso is a Spanish variant of Alfonso, a name carried through medieval Iberian naming traditions. Its spoken Spanish form has the stress on the middle syllable, so it need not sound like an English pronunciation of Alonzo. The older Alfonso family is linked to Germanic elements, but even those have competing reconstructions. The Spanish variant relationship is more secure than a tidy one-word translation.
