Meaning and background

The story behind Alyssa

Alyssa is an English variant of Alicia, part of the Alice naming family. Its spelling was probably influenced by the flower name alyssum; the plant word has a separate Greek linguistic history once connected with treating madness. That does not mean Alyssa is Greek for “without madness”. In English it is commonly spoken with the stress on the middle syllable, giving a clear distinction from other Alice variants.
