Meaning and background
The story behind Atlanta
Atlanta is the capital city of the American state of Georgia. Its present city name developed amid nineteenth-century railway expansion, in connection with the Western and Atlantic Railroad. Although Atlanta resembles Atalanta, the heroine of Greek myth, that similarity alone does not establish the city’s name as a mythological tribute. For a dog, Atlanta is a place name with a strong three-syllable sound.
