Meaning and background
The story behind Magenta
Magenta is a colour name for a vivid reddish-purple shade, and its history is unusually specific. The word arose in the nineteenth century when a synthetic dye was named after the 1859 Battle of Magenta in northern Italy. It was therefore not originally an ancient colour word meaning “magic”. As a dog name it can refer simply to colour or carry a less obvious historical link, while keeping those two associations distinct.
