Meaning and background
The story behind Avalanche
Avalanche is the English term for a mass of snow, ice or rock suddenly travelling down a mountain. It came into English through French, whose earlier Alpine form has a less certain origin. Applied to a dog it is a dramatic nature word, although calling the animal powerful or destructive would be pure speculation. The usual British word has three syllables and a final sh sound.
