Meaning and background
The story behind Bernice
Bernice is the shorter English and Biblical form of Berenice, whose deeper Greek ancestry leads to Pherenike, “bringing victory”. It is recorded in the New Testament in connection with the family of Herod Agrippa II. In British English the usual pronunciation ends in -NEES, rather than the sound of the English word “nice”. The victory gloss belongs to its ancient name history.
