Meaning and background
The story behind Carmen
Carmen combines two historical strands that are often oversimplified. It developed as a Spanish form of Carmel in a Marian devotional title, while its spelling was influenced by the Latin word for song. The title character of Bizet's opera adds a separate musical association. For a dog, an owner might intend any one of those connections, so simply labelling Carmen a music name loses part of its history. Its documented readings also differ between Spanish, English, Italian and French.
