Meaning and background

The story behind Cayman

Cayman is familiar from the Caribbean islands, but its background reaches further back. The Cayman Islands Government traces an early form, Caymanas, to a Carib word for a marine crocodile. The islands' environmental authorities also document the reptiles' former presence there. This is a well-supported place-name history, not proof that every use of Cayman is geographically inspired.
