Meaning and background
The story behind Charm
Charm originally referred to an incantation or spoken magical formula. Through Old French it goes back to the Latin carmen, meaning a song or verse; only later did the English word develop senses of attractiveness and small decorative or lucky objects. That progression gives the name a genuine linguistic story without requiring mystical claims about a pet. As a dog name it is short, and its present-day positive association is easy to recognise.
