Meaning and background
The story behind Cheo
Cheo is an affectionate Spanish-language nickname connected with José in Puerto Rican usage. The musician Cheo Feliciano is a well-documented example: his record label explains that his family called him Cheo as a child because it was a familiar version of José. That is stronger evidence than attaching an invented dictionary definition to the syllables. A dog called Cheo may share that warm sound without necessarily having a personal link to the singer.
- Origin
- Puerto Rican colloquial diminutive of José, documented in the nickname Cheo Feliciano Source
