Meaning and background
The story behind Chess
Chess is the English name of the strategy game played on a board with contrasting squares. It reached English through Old French esches, while the game's much older history stretches back towards India. Those are connected strands but not a reason to translate Chess as clever or winning. As a dog name it is unusually concise, and its recognisable reference to the board game does not require an invented personal-name etymology.
