Meaning and background
The story behind Cina
Cina has two southern Italian surname explanations in the dictionary. One comes from a feminine form of the personal name Cino. The other concerns accented Cinà, linked to Scinà and an older Greek occupational term for a cord or rope seller. Keeping the accented and unaccented histories visible prevents a misleading single translation. The four-letter spelling alone cannot determine which route belongs to a particular family or naming choice.
- Origin
- Southern Italian Cina can come from the feminine form of Cino; Cinà can be a variant of Scinà, associated with rope selling. Source
