Meaning and background

The story behind Dina

Dina has several genuine but unrelated histories. It is a form of biblical Dinah in a range of European languages; elsewhere it can shorten longer names ending in -dina, such as Bernardina. An Arabic form has also been tentatively connected to dīn, 'religion'. These routes must be presented separately, because the spelling alone cannot show which tradition any one pet's name follows.

Origin
Multiple origins: European form of Hebrew Dinah; short form of names ending -dina; separate Arabic form of uncertain derivation Source
