Meaning and background

The story behind Dracula

Dracula has a historical name and a literary afterlife. It referred to Vlad III of Wallachia as a son of Vlad II Dracul, with Dracul connected to the dragon; a recent linguistics study also supports 'son of the dragon' rather than the popular 'son of the devil' reading. Bram Stoker's 1897 vampire novel made the name widely recognisable. For a dog, the spooky association need not be confused with the original Romanian history.

Origin
Romanian historical epithet linked to Dracul and Latin draco Source
