Meaning and background

The story behind Goya

Goya is best known internationally as the surname of the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya, but it is not confined to one linguistic tradition. Surname scholarship documents a Basque form from goi, 'upper part', a Galician place-name route and a separate Japanese surname written with different characters. A Basque cultural institution also confirms the painter's family ancestry. The shared Roman spelling should never be given one universal translation.

Origin
Surname with several routes: Basque Goia from goi “upper part”; Galician habitational Goya; and distinct Japanese surnames with different characters. Source
