Meaning and background
The story behind Kari
Kari has distinct Norwegian and Finnish histories. The Norwegian entry describes a short form of Katarina, while the Finnish entry connects it with Macarius and its use in Juhani Aho’s novel Panu. Those are separate name families despite the matching spelling. For a dog, an owner should identify which connection is intended before explaining a deeper meaning. The compact four-letter form can be appealing on its own, but it does not justify borrowing a translation from whichever cultural route happens to be most convenient.
