Meaning and background
The story behind Laker
Laker may look like Lake with an extra ending, but the family-name history is more interesting. The Dictionary of American Family Names documents an English topographic surname for someone living by a stream, from Old English lacu, alongside a distinct north German variant of Lake. It is therefore misleading to insist that all Lakers simply mean “from the lake”.
- Origin
- English surname for someone living beside a stream; a distinct North German surname use also exists. Source
