Meaning and background
The story behind Lamont
Lamont developed as an English given name from a Scottish surname. Behind that surname lies medieval Gaelic Lagmann, which in turn comes from Old Norse lǫgmaðr, literally a “law man”. It is therefore not derived from the French phrase la mont. The name has two recorded English pronunciations, and no unique one should be forced on all English-speaking owners.
