Meaning and background
The story behind Lego
Lego is most recognisable as the name of the Danish construction-toy company. The manufacturer explains that founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen formed LEGO from Danish leg godt, meaning “play well”, in 1932. That is a company-name origin, not an ancient Danish personal name and not a literal promise about the behaviour of a pet. The original catalogue’s mixed-case spelling is retained despite the brand’s customary all-capital styling.
