Meaning and background
The story behind Leno
Leno is a documented family-name spelling, but the historical explanation is not settled. The Dictionary of American Family Names suggests an English surname from certain place names in northern France, and also considers an Americanised form of German Lienau. The spelling is familiar through entertainer Jay Leno, though his surname alone does not choose between those explanations. Until a particular family tradition is known, Leno should not be translated as one definite word.
