Meaning and background
The story behind Lele
Lele coincides exactly with a Hawaiian word that can mean fly, leap or jump; Hawaiian dictionaries also record unrelated nominal senses, including a ritual platform and certain land parcels. That established word history makes a defensible possible association, but it does not prove why any particular dog was named Lele. The repeated syllable has a distinctive rhythm, and without a recorded naming tradition it would be wrong to assign just one Hawaiian translation as a universal etymology.
