Meaning and background

The story behind Mackintosh

Mackintosh is a recognised Scottish surname spelling, a variant of McIntosh, from Gaelic Mac an Toisich, “son of the chief”. In ordinary British English a *mackintosh* also means a raincoat, named for inventor Charles Macintosh. Those two histories intersect through a person’s surname; the coat did not give rise to the clan name. For naming a dog, Mackintosh has that appealing dual connection with ancestry and wet-weather walks.

Origin
Scottish surname, variant of McIntosh, ultimately Gaelic Mac an Toisich, “son of the chief”. Source
