Meaning and background

The story behind Maud

Maud is a medieval English and French form of Matilda. Its history passes through the older Germanic name elements of Matilda rather than an unrelated English word. The name later found literary resonance in Alfred Tennyson’s poem Maud, published in the nineteenth century. It makes a compact one-syllable dog name, with a longer history than its plain spelling might suggest.

Origin
