Meaning and background
The story behind Maude
Maude is an alternative spelling of Maud, which in turn developed as a medieval form of Matilda. The final e changes the visual appearance but not the usual English pronunciation. It has the feel of an older human name, rather than a modern invented pet name, and can be called in a single syllable. Its lineage is better explained through Matilda than through any supposed separate definition of Maude.
