Meaning and background
The story behind Mayday
Mayday is internationally recognised as a spoken distress call in maritime and aviation communications. The word was adapted from a French expression asking for help, not formed from the English month May and the ordinary word day. That makes it a striking example of a word-name whose spelling can mislead. When used for a dog, the two syllables are easy to pronounce, but the established emergency meaning is worth knowing.
