Meaning and background
The story behind Mccartney
McCartney is best known to many people as a surname, but it has a documented Irish Gaelic derivation. It comes from Mac Artaine, referring to a son of Artan, itself related to the older personal name Art. The latter has been connected to a Gaelic word for bear; that does not mean every McCartney directly translates to “bear”. Used for a dog it has a familiar musical association, but the family-name history is distinct.
- Origin
- Irish surname anglicised from Gaelic Mac Artaine, “son of Artan”, a diminutive of Art, which is linked to a word meaning bear. Source
