Meaning and background
The story behind Whitney
Whitney developed as a given name from an English surname associated with a place-name in Herefordshire. The older elements have been interpreted, probably, as 'white island'; the reference does not present that analysis as certain. The name is also widely recognised from singer Whitney Houston, although her public association is much later than the surname. The neat two-syllable form differs from the longer Whitman and Whittaker.
- Origin
