Meaning and background
The story behind Munchkin
Munchkin has an affectionate small-person sense recorded by Merriam-Webster. That can give a little dog a deliberate size-based nickname, or provide gentle irony when the animal grows much larger than expected. The comparison is the owner's naming choice rather than a measurement or breed description. The cited entry supports this ordinary word sense without establishing a separate inherited personal-name root or every possible fictional association.
