Meaning and background
The story behind Oriole
Oriole names a group of colourful birds. The European golden oriole gave the English word its first common reference, and North American birds with similar colouring acquired the same name despite belonging to another family. Linguistically it comes through French and earlier forms related to Latin 'golden'. It is a useful example of a name whose ornithological sense and colour-based word history reinforce one another.
