Meaning and background

The story behind Pamela

Pamela has an unusually specific literary origin. The name was created by the English poet Philip Sidney for his *Arcadia* in the late sixteenth century and later appeared in Samuel Richardson's eighteenth-century novel. A proposed Greek reading, ‘all sweetness’ or ‘all honey’, is plausible but not confirmed as Sidney's intention. That distinction matters more than any fashionable meaning label. Pamela has three familiar English syllables and a rich recorded literary history.

Meaning
Invented personal name with a speculative Greek interpretation of all sweetness or honey; original intention unproved. Source
Origin
Literary English name coined by Philip Sidney in the late 16th century, later used by Samuel Richardson. Source
