Meaning and background
The story behind Panama
Panama takes its familiar meaning from the Central American country and its capital city. The deeper Indigenous place-name etymology is not securely resolved: local accounts mention fish, butterflies, a regional tree and other explanations, while a historical dictionary offers a different linguistic proposal. It would be irresponsible to translate the country's name categorically as ‘many fish’. As a dog name, Panama supplies a distinctive three-syllable place reference rather than a settled personal-name meaning.
