The story behind Pikachu
Pikachu is a created character name from Pokémon rather than an old personal name. Designer Atsuko Nishida described choosing pika for the impression of flashing light and chu mainly for sound and size; she specifically said the mouse idea was not the original intention. This first-hand explanation corrects the often repeated, oversimplified translation 'sparkle mouse'.
