Meaning and background
The story behind Private
Private is an English adjective for something personal, confidential or not open to the public. It is also a military noun for a soldier of junior rank. Both uses trace back to Latin privatus, but that ordinary word history does not make Private an ancient personal name. Its two syllables and formal sound lend themselves to playful military-style address, although there is no basis for assuming the dog or its owner served in the armed forces.
