Meaning and background
The story behind Samwise
Samwise is a literary name whose intended linguistic play is unusually explicit. Tolkien used the English-looking construction from Old English elements meaning half and wise for Samwise Gamgee, Frodo’s travelling companion in The Lord of the Rings. The work also presents a different underlying hobbit-language name, Banazîr. This is a source-backed fictional formation, not a claim that a dog named Samwise will be particularly loyal or clever.
