Meaning and background

The story behind Seoul

Seoul is the capital of South Korea and an established place-name with a long linguistic history. Seoul’s own metropolitan government traces the modern name to earlier Korean place and capital terms, including Seorabeol and Seobeol. This is much more specific than the loose claim that it is simply an arbitrary modern city label. As a pet name, the metropolitan connection is factual while the owner’s intended association remains unknown.

Origin
Modern Korean capital place-name traced by Seoul’s metropolitan government to older Silla forms including Seorabeol and Seobeol. Source
