Meaning and background
The story behind Sojourner
A sojourner is someone staying somewhere temporarily rather than settling there permanently. The word also has a major historical association with Sojourner Truth, who chose that name while becoming an influential abolitionist and advocate for women’s rights. The common noun and the historical chosen name are related but not identical facts. Used for a dog, Sojourner has a wandering sound without proving the animal likes to roam.
