Meaning and background
The story behind Tobby
Tobby is the title of Hansjürgen Pohland’s 1961 film about jazz musician Tobias Fichelscher. The Deutsche Kinemathek describes its partly documentary portrait of a musician moving through Berlin and choosing artistic freedom over a commercial pop career. Its preservation program also documents the film’s restoration. This offers Tobby a particular connection to German cinema and jazz. The film reference does not establish a general derivation for the pet-name spelling.
