Meaning and background
The story behind Ulysses
Ulysses is the Latin form of Odysseus, the Greek hero associated with the long voyage home described in Homer's Odyssey. The spelling also belongs to the American general and president Ulysses S. Grant and to James Joyce's novel *Ulysses*. Those historical and literary connections are well documented; a supposed single literal meaning of the original Greek name is much less secure and has not been supplied as fact.
