Meaning and background

The story behind Welsh

Welsh is both the modern English adjective for Wales and a surname whose history often points to someone described as Welsh-speaking or from Wales. The old surname vocabulary could also mean 'foreign' from the viewpoint of particular English-speaking communities. Other surnames were later Anglicised to Welsh. Those records explain the heritage of the word without assigning anyone's nationality to a dog.

Origin
English, Scottish and Irish ethnic surname from Middle English welshe, denoting someone of Welsh origin or language; some Anglicised surname routes are independent. Source
