Meaning and background

The story behind Windsor

Windsor is best known as the name of the Berkshire town and castle, as well as an English habitational surname. Its medieval place-name history is disputed, though one explanation points to an Old English phrase roughly interpreted as 'windlass bank'. In 1917 George V adopted Windsor as the British royal family's house name and surname, taking it from the castle. That is a documented later association, not a reason to assume a dog has a royal connection.

Origin
English habitational surname from places named Windsor; historical “windlass bank” interpretation of some place names remains disputed. Source
