Meaning and background

The story behind Woof

Woof is an imitative word for a dog's bark, making its animal reference unusually direct. English also has a separate older woof meaning the crosswise yarn woven through a fabric's warp. These two senses have different histories and should not be blended into an invented personal-name origin. In Britain woof is familiar from children's impressions of barking, and its single syllable makes it a deliberately comic choice for calling a dog.

Meaning
English imitative noun or verb representing a dog’s bark; a separate noun “woof” means woven weft thread. Source
