Meaning and background
The story behind Wu
Wu is a Romanised form of several Chinese surnames, and the exact written character is essential to its interpretation. For instance, the spellings 吳, 伍, 武 and 巫 have unrelated surname traditions, associated with an ancient state, the numeral five, martial terminology and ritual occupations respectively. Giving every Wu a single translation would be a serious error. The name may also appear outside Chinese surname contexts, which cannot be settled from two Roman letters alone.
