Meaning and background
The story behind Andromeda
Andromeda comes from Greek mythology, where she is a princess rescued by Perseus. Her name combines a word meaning man with a second element that ancient Greek dictionaries connect either with providing or being mindful, or with protecting and ruling. Because those derivations differ, a neat single-word translation is unwarranted. The constellation and nearby galaxy also bear her name; in British English it is commonly pronounced an-DROM-i-duh.
